What on earth is a muscular health check? Well I use the Art of Advanced Palpation - also known as the practice of informed touch, or the art of seeing with your fingertips, but it really means that I am feeling the dog's muscles by using my hands and fingertips. As a superficial check I will evaluate over 50 pairs of muscles as well as areas of fascia look for changes in the muscle tone, temperature, texture or tenderness - commonly known as the 4 Ts.

By identifying changes to the 4 Ts I can identify things like:

  • Strains - tears to the muscle caused by overstretching, these can be debilitating depending on how much muscle is affected

  • Trigger Points - commonly know as knots , but are hyperirritable bands within the muscle and cause early muscle fatigue, reduced range of motion and be very painful. Watch to see if you can spot a 'local twitch response' when we do the muscular health check as this indicates a trigger point!

  • Wide Radiating Myofascial Pain - this is where a large area of fascia, or connective tissue, is affected causing pain. Fascia wraps every single muscle and organ in the body and should slide and glide, when it becomes tight is restricts movement and causes pain

So next time you & your dog see me, stop and ask for your free muscular health check!

During the initial session I take a full history, asking about any medical issues, or previous injuries, as well activities of daily living, diet, supplements and the main areas of concern, this is just to build up a picture of the dog and what they like doing. I will then ask to see your dog moving to assess  gait and posture. A full body palpation is completed to help identify any areas of tenderness and tension in the muscles and to test the tone of the muscles. The massage uses the Lenton Method™ a unique approach for the treatment of musculoskeletal problems and chronic pain management to rehabilitate soft tissue injuries and supporting orthopaedic conditions (i.e arthritis/hip dysplasia)

Follow Up Session

You might decide to try just one session of massage to see if the treatment suits your dog. It’s a good way to give it a try, find out more, and see how your dog responds to the treatment.  However, when looking to improve an existing condition, address chronic pain and mobility issues, provide relief for arthritic joints, spondylosis or other  orthopaedic conditions, or rehabilitate a soft tissue injury, it’s important to be realistic about your dog’s treatment. For this reason we normally recommend 1-3 sessions, the Method frequently gets results in 1-3 sessions with positive changes the owner can see and the dog can feel. After the initial three sessions, you might want to consider maintenance treatments to manage long term conditions.

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO CANINE MASSAGE - IN PERSON

Would you like to learn how to give your dog a Swedish Massage?

This workshop is a great introduction to Canine Massage so you can help support your dog at home.

Canine massage offers the same benefits for your dog as it does for you. It promotes relaxation, helping your dog to unwind and alleviate stress. Canine massage also enhances circulation, encouraging blood flow to the muscles and tissues, which aids in the delivery of vital nutrients and oxygen. It reduces muscle tension and stiffness, particularly in active or senior dogs, providing relief from discomfort and enhancing mobility. Finally, the bonding experience between you and your dog during your massage sessions strengthens the emotional connection, fostering trust and enhancing the overall well-being of both of you.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to deepen your connection with your beloved best friend while enhancing their physical well-being. Book on a canine massage workshop today and embark on a new journey of connection with them.
